#13 of “23 Stories of Change” for our City Skyline Challenge!
My name is Anthony. I am 17 years old and am from Redding CA. I attended Outward Bound’s two-week Sierra rock climbing course in August 2013. During this course, we backpacked through mountainous terrain, carrying loaded packs in excess of 45 pounds. Though the Sierra mountain views were breath taking, at times it was very strenuous and demanding to reach each day’s destination and campsite.
While rock climbing, we experienced a variety of categories from moderate slopes to very difficult steep peaks. We learned the basic techniques of climbing first hand by embracing the risks, by practicing face climbs at nearly 10,000 feet, and by completing one terrifying free hanging rappel that would make anyone’s adrenaline pump.
Though I did not completely conquer my fear of heights, I definitely faced it. I will cherish for a life-time a group of friends that I was able to grow with, learn with, and be challenged with. My passion for adventure and the wilderness has grown tremendously since my time at Outward Bound. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to not only grow as a young man, but also to build on my outdoor knowledge and experience.
You can make an expedition possible for a student like Anthony by participating in or donating to the City Skyline Challenge!
