The applications are in and we have selected our new Youth Leadership Corps students for 2014-15! The Youth Leadership Corps is a selected group of deserving high school students who tackle service projects around the Bay Area, participate in team building excursions, and experience a 2 week Outward Bound California course in the High Sierra during the summer. In the beginning of May, this year’s YLC graduating class welcomed the next generation to the Outward Bound California family with a ceremony and potluck at our Bay Area Center base in the Presidio. These students are motivated to become leaders in their schools and communities and dedicated to serve right here in the Bay Area. If you were unable to be a part of the celebration, now’s the time to meet your 2014/2015 YLC cohort!
Maya
Maya will be a Senior at Palo Alto High School this fall. She is originally from Tel Aviv, Israel, and moved to California two and a half years ago. She challenges herself academically and is a self-proclaimed tree-hugger. She cannot wait to explore the High Sierras and be a part of a team, giving back to the community that has given her so many opportunities already.
Natalie
Natalie has been playing the violin for seven years and mentors younger classmates at lunch as a Junior at Redwood High. She is a Girl Scout and was once the top Girl Scout Cookie salesperson in her troop! She is hardworking and loves working with children.
Jialing (Lily)
Lily is trilingual; She speaks Chinese, Spanish, and English. She will be a Senior at Mission High School in the fall, and is helping newly arrived immigrants integrate into society through a program at the Community Youth Center of San Francisco. She is excited to have as many outdoor experiences as possible!
Bobby
A Junior at Maria Carrillo High School, Bobby is the oldest of four and applied for YLC because he was transformed by his first Outward Bound California experience. He is excited to add more leadership skills in his proverbial tool box!
Talayah
Talayah will be a Senior this fall at Convent of the Sacred Heart High School San Francisco, and has worked with third-graders at Opportunity Impact. She is looking forward to being unplugged from the every-day digital pull and basking in the High Sierra sun.
Heather
Heather is a planner, a do-er, and an ice-skater! The Palo Alto High School Senior hopes to build on her hiking and navigating skills this summer and is ready to help the community with new friends.
Unique
As a Senior at Pittsburg Senior High School, Unique likes to keep busy! She has been a cheerleader since fourth grade, runs track, is starting a breast-cancer awareness club, and volunteers at an after school program at Martin Luther King Junior High School. She believes that no one is limited to what they can achieve, and she knows being a part of YLC will bring on some new and memorable challenges.
Emily
Emily will be a Senior at the Urban School of San Francisco this fall. She was Co-captain of her soccer team this past year, and led her team to an undefeated victory! Group dynamics are important to Emily, so she is looking forward to being a part of the Outward Bound California team this year.
Nick
Nick is a Senior at the Team Program, and has been playing ukulele for seven years. He is passionate about actively improving the environment and loves to hike Mt. Tamalpais in his spare time. Because of his infectious work ethic and leadership, his football team voted him the Lineman of the Year Award!
Fai
A Sophomore at San Francisco International High School, Fai is originally from Samoa, and is looking forward to being able to play in the wilderness again. He leads his school’s wrestling team and is ready to learn about California’s flora and fauna.
