"I learned that I am stronger than I thought I was and that no obstacle can hold me back from trying. On this course I experienced many first time things such as sleeping outside, cooking outside and spending one night in complete solitude. I didn't experience these adventures by myself, I had a family with me, 9 strangers who I met at Fresno airport and spent 10 days and nights with."
—Hector I., Alpine Backpacking & Climbing
"Outward Bound taught me to respect the people around me, trust people around me and support the people around me. It makes me realize how important teamwork is."
—Alfred L., Mountaineering, 14 Days

Often, when you think you’ve reached your limits, you find there is more within you than you knew. Discover passion, dig deep and master skills—both technical and interpersonal. Surrounded by the natural world and a crew of adventurous peers, you'll work as a team to achieve goals and learn skills.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle School expeditions are designed to create a connection with nature and a newfound confidence in students ages 12-14. Surrounded by like-minded peers and supportive instructors, students build bonds with one another, begin to test their own independence and return home with new insights and skills to share.
High School courses include ages 14-18. Often one of the first experiences of independence participants may experience, these courses focus on group dynamics, especially working as a team and the challenges inherent within. Participants will backpack and rock climb with skilled instructors, often cited as the course high. Outcomes include leadership development and communication with technical skills like navigation and camp craft.
Designed for participants aged 18-22, our classic college expeditions are centered on success and failure; challenge and change. Participants gain hands-on experience in leadership, service and excellence—skills that invariably translate to success in the classroom, in the field or in a future career.
Ditch the tablet. Unplug the phone. Tap into the power of the natural world. You might be surprised at what you’ll find in the silence between footsteps; the quiet between paddle strokes; the space between stars. Designed for 25+, these classic wilderness adventure expeditions are about recapturing the enthusiasm of doing something new, different and difficult. Participants tackle personal and physical challenges and rediscover their strength and energy. With a focus on recharging and taking space to reconnect, classic adult courses instill a fresh sense of clarity.
One thing to consider is the outcomes on a course; Outward Bound California courses vary in length from 4 to 30 days. On shorter courses, participants will receive an intro to leadership skills, strength of character and a desire to serve. With longer courses, the same outcomes and benefits are achieved with the ability to reach a more profound level of mastery, as there are more opportunities develop technical skills, receive and implement feedback and further personal development.
